Employing an Overseas Trained Doctor (OTD)

In most cases, a practice will need both Area of Need (AON) and District of Workforce Shortage (DWS) status to employ an Overseas Trained Doctor (OTD).

The AON Program assists employers in NSW who have had difficulty recruiting medical practitioners with specialist registration, to then recruit suitably qualified OTDs or International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to vacant positions that have been approved by the NSW Ministry of Health as an AON.

The AON Program is a strategy to provide temporary assistance to locations and services experiencing medical workforce shortages.

AON status is approved by the NSW Ministry of Health. Evidence must be provided to show the position is either located in an area that has been identified as a DWS or provides services that have DWS status i.e. After Hours.
