Patients can now register for MyMedicare. MyMedicare allows patients to register with their regular general practice and nominate their preferred GP and providers within the practice.
What is MyMedicare?
The Australian Government has introduced a new voluntary patient registration model called MyMedicare to drive improvements in primary health care for all Australians and deliver new funding packages to primary care providers.
MyMedicare will strengthen the relationship between patients and their health care teams by allowing patients to register with their regular general practice and select their preferred GP and providers within the practice.
What are the Benefits of MyMedicare for Patients?
There are several benefits of registering for MyMedicare for patients. These include:
- Access to greater continuity of care for patients with their nominated practice, improving health outcomes.
- Access to longer MBS-rebated telephone calls with their usual general practice (levels C and D).
Registered patients under 16 years old, pensioners and other Commonwealth concession card holders will have access to longer telehealth (video) consultations.
How can Patients Register for MyMedicare?
You can register for MyMedicare and select your preferred GP at your:
- accredited general practice
- Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service
- Aboriginal Medical Service
- nurse practitioner-led practice with a GP
- other non-traditional practices (who meets the healthcare provider registration and eligibility criteria).
Your chosen practice must be registered in MyMedicare before you can start your own patient registration.
There are three ways you can register with your chosen practice for MyMedicare.
- Online through their MyGov Account
- The Medicare Express Plus mobile application
- Paper registration form. This will be submitted in person at the practice where general practice staff will manually register patients via PRODA

Can Patients Change Their Preferred Practice or GP?
Yes. Patients can change their preferred GP at their registered practice at any time. Patients can register with a new practice once they meet the eligibility requirements and if that practice is registered in MyMedicare. Both the patient and the practice need to provide consent for your registration to be complete.

Do I Have to Register?
Registration in MyMedicare is voluntary for patients, practices and providers.
Registration is not compulsory; however, it is recommended to improve continuity of care for patients.
