Mount Druitt GP Dr Michael Malek has been named the 2026 RACGP NSW&ACT GP of the Year, recognising his commitment to his patients, his community and the next generation of GPs. The Practice Principal of Covenant Medical Hub received the award at the RACGP NSW&ACT annual member meeting and awards night in Sydney. The award recognises Dr Malek’s dedication to general practice and his work supporting the diverse needs of the Mount Druitt community.
The RACGP highlighted his focus on communication as an important part of good clinical care, along with initiatives including free influenza vaccination programs and support for Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. He has also helped support the next generation of GPs, developing resources to strengthen consultation skills among future doctors.
For Dr Malek, the decision to establish his own practice in Mount Druitt was very much about serving the local community. “It’s been a passion of mine to do something on my own and provide my services to the Mount Druitt local community in particular,” Dr Malek said. After working at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Dr Malek moved into general practice in 2015 and later established Covenant Medical Hub.
Today, the practice provides a broad range of care for the Mount Druitt community, including preventive health, chronic disease management, mental health, vaccinations, cancer screening, allied health and injury management. Covenant Medical Hub is also helping to build Western Sydney’s future primary care workforce through its involvement in registrar training and engagement. WentWest Chief Executive, Andrew Newton said the award was recognition of Dr Malek’s commitment, and a great example of the quality care GPs provide in Western Sydney.
“This is great recognition for Dr Malek and the work he is doing in Mount Druitt,” Mr Newton said. “General practice is at the heart of our communities. Our GPs know their patients, they understand their communities and they are often the first place people turn when they need care.
“Dr Malek is also investing in the next generation of GPs, and that is incredibly important for Western Sydney. We need great GPs choosing to build their careers here and stay here.
