There is rising housing stress and homelessness across our region, with Cumberland local government area recording the highest homelessness rate of 94.3 per 10,000 people, more than double the state average, according to Western Sydney Primary Health Network Needs Assessment.

On World Homeless Day, WentWest highlights its work with our commissioned providers and other organisations including the Parramatta Regional Homelessness Interagency to:

– Improve referral pathways between health and housing services

– Map service gaps for rough sleepers and CALD communities

– Advocate for streamlined care

Provider Spotlight: Dunlea Alcohol and Other Drugs Transition Program

This program run by Youth Off the Streets (YOTS) and provides trauma-informed, evidence-based support to young people and families impacted by substance use and homelessness.

Offering three to six months of tailored AOD case work and counselling, grounded in the Behaviour Cycle of Change, CBT, and motivational interviewing. Targeted family support to strengthen relationships through the ‘Engaging Adolescents’ program. Early intervention for school students and the wider community through education and capacity building. Flexible support options based on assessed needs, from brief three-month support to intensive six-month intervention for those facing complex challenges like homelessness or domestic and family violence.

The Dunlea team recognises that change is a journey. Their approach meets young people where they are, respecting their readiness and empowering them with the tools to move forward.
