The power of connection, collaboration and culture was showcased in an inspiring talk to the Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly this month.

WentWest’s Gaza Mental Health Response Coordinator, Amal discussed a coordinated effort to support communities affected by the Gaza conflict. Spanning multiple Primary Health Networks (PHNs) and involving collaboration with community leaders and organisations, the Response to the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza project provides grassroots support and promotes healing through traditional cultural activities, including embroidery, helping people reconnect with their heritage and community.

WentWest’s Provider Success Manager, Simon also shared insights into new initiatives designed to strengthen the capability of smaller community organisations, helping to access funding opportunities.

The informative talk helped to demonstrate to the Assembly the important work that WentWest is doing to advance its recommendations.

Aiming to improve health and social services for Western Sydney, Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly was formed following two Citizens’ Juries in 2023.

The Assembly was launched by WentWest in July 2024 as an important mechanism to track implementation of the recommendations made by the Juries.

As a representative cross-section of our region, the Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly aims to meet monthly for the first year to promote better connections between health and social care, tracking the implementation of the health and social care priority recommendations made by the juries and demonstrating meaningful allyship between First Nations and other culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Western Sydney.
