The introduction of electronic referrals (eReferrals) was established as a state-wide project to improve the quality and safety of referral processes, ease of use, avoiding wastage and minimising patient delay to accessing ambulatory care services. Users can benefit from pre-populated data, field validation, consistency checks and the ability to track and save drafts of referrals.

The eReferrals initiative, led by eHealth NSW and HealthLink, aims to address the inefficiencies in current referral processes as highlighted by GPs. The system allows Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) services to receive eReferrals directly from general practice systems. This process eliminates the need for follow-ups and multiple referrals, as referrers receive notifications when their referrals are received and accepted.

Integrating with HealthLink

HealthLink eReferrals can be integrated at no cost with the following software programs: Best Practice, Genie, Medical Director, Medtech Evolution, Shexie Platinum and Zedmed. Tutorials and user guides on how to integrate HealthLink with your practice management system can be found online.
