More than half of Western Sydney’s population is overweight and at risk of developing type 2 diabetes (1), Western Sydney health professionals are taking the lead to address the problem. 

More than 450 gathered for the Western Sydney Diabetes Masterclass in Parramatta recently.

Hosted by Western Sydney Diabetes, in partnership with WentWest, the Western Sydney PHN, and the Western Sydney Local Health District, the Masterclass showcased the power of collaboration in tackling one of Australia’s most pressing health challenges. The day featured eight expert-led sessions, covering everything from early detection and behavioural change to the use of technology and practice data to optimise care. 

Key presentations included:

  • Diabetes Together: How Western Sydney Diabetes Can Support Your Practice – Professor Glen Maberly on integrated care models 
  • Using Technology to Enhance Care Jaybee Serrano, Victoria Silvestro and Dr Rajini Jayaballa 
  • Diet Optimisation with GLP-1 Victoria Silvestro debate on sustainable weight loss
  • Frailty and Diabetes Professor Richard Lindley, Anandhi Murugesan and Yasmine Abou Hamed 

As part WentWest’s ongoing work to strengthen partnerships and support practices in delivering high-quality, patient-centred diabetes care WentWest have expanded two key initiatives designed to optimise quality improvement: 

  • 2kg Challenge – encouraging small, sustainable weight reduction strategies that can have a significant impact on diabetes prevention and management. 
  • Diabetes QI Dashboard – a new tool to help practices track and improve diabetes care and outcomes through real-time data and actionable insights.
