On Thursday 26 September 2024, the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association announced that Dr Walid Jammal, Western Sydney GP, will be awarded the 2024 Sidney Sax medal for outstanding contributions to the development and improvement of Australia’s health care system. The Sidney Sax Medal was first awarded by the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association in 1986 to health professionals who have made outstanding contributions in health services policy, organisation, delivery and research.

Hon Jillian Skinner, Board Chair of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association stated, ‘Dr Jammal’s dedication to quality and safety in health care, along with his expertise in health system policy and reform has made him an invaluable asset to the health care sector, and we are pleased to recognise his decades-long commitment to strengthening primary care in Australia’.

Dr Walid Jammal is the principal GP in a well-established general practice in The Hills Shire Local Government Area. Walid has over 25 years of experience spanning paediatrics, men’s health, medico-legal matters and quality and safety control in general practice. He is a well-respected leader in the health care system, having worked with NSW Health and the Commonwealth Government, testing and developing integrated care models. He also co-chaired the Primary Care Reform Steering Group working on Australia’s Primary Care Health Care 10-Year Plan. He was a previous member of the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce and advises the present government as a member of the Strengthening Medicare Implementation Oversight Committee.  

On news of being awarded this prestigious health care award, Dr Walid Jammal commented, “I am deeply humbled to receive this wonderful award. I continue to be inspired by the hard-working health care providers of Western Sydney. This recognition strengthens my motivation to improve the system for the patients we serve.”

Dr Walid Jammal also spent six years as a dedicated Board member of WentWest, Western Sydney Primary Health Network, his commitment and expertise have been a wonderful contribution to our strategic direction and successes.

The 2024 Sidney Sax Medal award presentation will take place on 15 October 2024 at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. Congratulations to Dr Walid Jammal on this wonderful and well-deserved achievement.
