Western Sydney regularly experiences temperatures up to 6–10 degrees hotter than other parts of Sydney. Combined with rapid population growth, these conditions make the region highly vulnerable to extreme weather events such as heatwaves.

The first National Climate Risk Assessment warns that heatwave-related deaths in Sydney could rise by more than 400 per cent (1). Health professionals play a vital role in reminding the community how to stay cool and reduce the risk of heatstroke and heat-related illness.

Who is Most at Risk in a Heatwave?

While all community are at risk during heatwaves, there are some high-risk groups who are extra vulnerable during extreme weather conditions.

  • Expectant mums and young children
  • Older people
  • People with chronic and mental illness
  • Outdoor workers

Encourage the community to keep cool with these tips:

  • Have frequent, small sips of water
  • Put your hands and feet in cold water, or have a cool shower
  • Remove extra layers of clothing and any tight clothes
  • Lie down in a cool or shady area
  • Cool by moistening skin and fanning
  • Visit a Western Sydney Cool Centre

Western Sydney Cool Centres

A Cool Centre is a place people can go to seek relief from extreme heat. These are especially for people who are unable to keep cool at home.

Mental Health Wellness During Extreme Heat

Heatwaves can also exacerbate mental illness and increase the risk of domestic violence (2). Studies have shown that violence increases with warmer weather which has been linked to disrupted sleep patterns, increased social isolation during extreme temperatures and increased discomfort and irritability due to temperatures.
