Western Sydney Immunisation rates for young children have risen thanks in part to the annual WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health Network, Immunisation Bike Competition.

On-time vaccination is the best way to protect your child, family and community against vaccine-preventable diseases. Under the National Immunisation Program, vaccines are due at birth, 6-8 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 4 years. Childhood immunisations are available at local GP practices or Aboriginal Medical Service.

This year, over 800 patient entries were received during the competition period (from October 2025 – January 2026), marking a significant increase of over 107% from the previous year.

The winner’s ceremony, held at Blacktown Exercise and Sports Technology Hub, was attended by 16 families and included a very special guest appearance by Walter the Wombat.

Every child who received their 12-month, 18-month or 4-year-old immunisation during the competition period was eligible to go into the draw to win a bike and helmet.

Winning a bicycle and helmet is a great healthy incentive for parents to ensure that their children are immunised.

WentWest would like to extend our thanks to all participants and practices who took part in this year’s Immunisation Bike Competition. While this year’s results have been positive, childhood immunisation coverage rates are still a work in progress.

Current immunisation rates in the Western Sydney region are below the 95% coverage targets for one, two and five-year old age groups. WentWest provides support to general practices through resources, education and practice visits.
