As the Western Sydney Primary Health Network, WentWest has been contracted by the Department of Health to increase the service delivery capacity of the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) treatment sectors to support people across the Western Sydney region who require help for AOD.
AOD Priority Areas
Working with partners such as the Western Sydney Local Health District Drug Health, the NGO AOD sector and their peak body Network of Alcohol & Other Drugs Agencies, Agency Clinical Innovation and other stakeholders, we have identified that the AOD priority groups for Western Sydney are:
AOD Services and Programs
Commissioning services that make a tangible difference in people’s lives to move towards a life that’s drug and addiction free is at the core of the work we do in the AOD area. The below services and programs provide assistance to the above priority groups.
The pilot transitional AOD service provides drug and alcohol support to men on remand or short sentences exiting the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre at Silverwater. Supporting those who have complex needs, including mental illness and/or cognitive impairment, the service creates a link between NSW Corrective Services and health services post-release such as GPs, allowing warm referrals where possible.
A free interactive app that provides mental health, drug and alcohol information and services in Western Sydney, with many services available 24 hours a day. The app is available to community members and health professionals. Go to mindguide.org.au for more information.
An early intervention program for young people aged 12-25 years providing access to support and information for a broad range of concerns including drugs and alcohol, mental health and counselling services. We commission three locations in Western Sydney – Mount Druitt, Parramatta and Castle Hill, and health professionals can access the referral form online. For more information visit the headspace website.
We have commissioned Ted Noffs to provide expert advice and educational material to support youth workers and schools in Western Sydney on issues related to adolescent development with specific reference to drug and alcohol use. The training will be available at three locations in the Western Sydney region; the Hills District, Blacktown/Mount Druitt and Parramatta. Due to the current constraints imposed by COVID-19, three live drug and alcohol training packages will be delivered online. Visit the Noffs website for more information.
Living with Alcohol Dependency Video Series
To help members of our community, their families and friends learn more about the effects of alcohol dependency and how to take the first steps to seek help, we created a series of videos where Western Sydney community members share their stories on living with alcohol dependency. In the five-part series, we hear about the early days, recognising the problem, treatment, changing lifestyle and words of wisdom.
