COVID-19 testing clinics and dedicated Pathology Collection Centres are up and running in the Western Sydney area. Together with hospitals, general practices and the Western Sydney Local Health District, these free COVID-19 testing facilities have been established to test patients who are suspected of having COVID-19.

Testing for COVID-19

Patients who are suspected of having COVID-19 and meet the current NSW Health testing criteria can access the COVID-19 test for FREE.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever (≥37.5), cough, sore throat, shortness of breath (difficulty breathing), loss of smell and loss of taste. Other reported symptoms of COVID-19 include fatigue, runny nose, muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting and loss of appetite. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress.

The test requires the collection of nasal and throat swabs and generally takes less than 10 minutes.

Patients who are tested for COVID-19 are required to follow the NSW Health self-isolation guidelines until the results are available and further advice has been provided. Test results can take up to 72 hours until they are available. Any tests that return a positive COVID-19 result must be notified to the Public Health Unit.

Local GP-led Respiratory Clinics and COVID-19 Clinics

In response to COVID-19, the Department of Heath are funding over 100 GP-led Respiratory Clinics to assess suspected cases of COVID-19 to provide early treatment to patients. These clinics are established within, or adjacent to, general practices. A GP referral isn’t required however one can be provided. Patients will need to make an appointment before they attend a GP-led Respiratory Clinic.

COVID-19 Clinics are located near hospitals. A GP referral isn’t required and generally, appointments aren’t necessary. Patients will have the option to receive their test results via text message if they visit a COVID-19 Clinic.

Both clinics can conduct COVID-19 assessments, testing and patient follow-up (for positive results). However, GPs can conduct a COVID-19 assessment and provide a GP referral which will not only speed up the testing process, but also ensure the test results are sent back to the GP.

Local COVID-19 Pathology Collection Centres

COVID-19 Pathology Collection Centres have been established in Western Sydney to help perform tests for patients who are suspected of having COVID-19.

A GP referral and appointment are required. Practices remain responsible for informing their patients about their test results. Until the result is received, it is a requirement for the tested patient to self-isolate.

Referring a Patient

Before you refer your patient to a COVID-19 Pathology Collection Centre, you should:

  • Conduct a COVID-19 assessment.
  • Provide your patient with a completed pathology referral form.
  • Supply your patient with a surgical mask advising them to wear it, if possible.
  • Advise your patient to contact the collection centre to make an appointment before they attend.
  • Remind your patient to self-isolate until they receive their result.

Drive-through Pathology Collection Centres

These centres can perform testing for COVID-19 via a ‘drive-in/drive-out’ method whilst the patient is within their car.

Currently, only patients who have been assessed by a GP and have a completed pathology request form can attend these centres.
